The two will discuss the future of the speaker position

The two California assembly members vying for the top spot in the California assembly will be meeting Thursday to discuss the future of the Assembly Speaker position.

Central coast Assemblymember Robert Rivas and current speaker, Anthony Rendon, released a joint statement on May 31 confirming Rivas has enough votes to become the next speaker. Ultimately, a decision was not made that day.

When asked why a vote wasn't taken to make Rivas the speaker on that day, according to Rivas's office, no vote was taken because speaker Rendon would not allow it saying it was unconstitutional.

Rivas's office disagrees with that assessment.

The two will be meeting this upcoming Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the future of the speaker position and possibly a transition.

As of now, Rendon has not said anything public about an agreed-upon transition and remains speaker until a formal vote is taken by the assembly.

Rendon has been the speaker for the last six years. He is up for reelection this year. If he wins, it would be his final two years in office before he is termed out in 2024.
