The Ageing Well Torbay Festival is back – with special events planned to honour the life of the late Queen.

The eighth and possibly final festival will take place this year at the Riviera Centre in Torquay on Saturday (September 17), between 10am and 5pm, after Covid forced it online for both 2020 and 2021.

Organisers boast that it is bigger and better than ever, with a stellar line-up representing the very best of the festivals held in the Bay since the lottery-funded Ageing Well Torbay project was launched in 2015.

And organisers will be working closely with churches in the Bay and Torbay Council; there will be tributes throughout the day and a book of condolence will be available to sign for those who wish to. There will be music from a church singing group alongside the Salvation Army Band on the main stage and there will be a time for reflection and prayer.

There will also be a quiet room set aside for people to ponder their memories of The Queen down the years and a wall will be set up where those reminiscences can be shared.

Tracey Cabache, director of TCDT, said: “It means that we are not quite going out with the bang that we expected, but we need to keep that in perspective – celebrating Her Majesty’s life with respect and reflection whilst looking back over joyous recollections of the seven-year long Ageing Well Torbay project.

“It is a balancing act and one that we hope we have got right, so there will still be something for everyone.”

The festival aims to bring together the best of past festivals, showcasing the cream of the Bay’s talent. The entertainment is designed with everyone in mind bringing back the best of the Bay’s talent by popular request and will include the ever-in-demand Sandy Sparkle, who will perform as well as compèring the main stage.

Vivien and Barry, who perform as Twogetherness, will be back singing duets and recounting their fascinating lives in TV and film. The Torbay Rock Choir will perform twice on the main stage. As usual, there will be lots of opportunities to try new things, whether tai chi, yoga or a whole host of other exercises, and organisers have also lined up an array of top-notch speakers. What festival would be complete without the opportunity to dance and this year Claire Parker will be getting others to join in to boogy the afternoon away with an end of festival dance party.

Ageing Well Torbay may be no more, but the community building team - now funded in part by Torbay Council - is going from strength to strength and have expanded to support all age groups and the entire team will be available to meet as they showcase their work.
