Bang & Olufsen Theatre—TV not included.
Bang & Olufsen has just unveiled its latest high-end audio device: a big, unmissable soundbar that sounds astonishing. And has a sky-high price tag.
It’s designed to last a long time, and to work in multiple ways, offering versatility as well as sonic goodness. The soundbar projects audio in multiple directions and it attaches to the base of the TV. How it looks depends on the finish you choose, including different metal shades and wooden grilles.
But it can also stand on its own, and there are luxurious attachments such as a motorized wall bracket and motorized floor stand, so that your TV screen can rotate to face exactly where you need it to.
The audio is projected forwards, to the sides and upwards and B&O says that the 6.5-inch woofers are the biggest to be found on any soundbar. These are just part of the package which includes 12 speaker drivers in total and 800 watts of amplification power, delivering “up to 112 dB sound pressure level”.
Whatever the digits, in practice the results are spectacular, to see the least, with rich, precise sound delivered, and this is an understatement, very powerfully. Turn the volume up and the results are almost overwhelming, whether you’re listening to classical music that builds effortlessly until the whole orchestra is blasting away or delicate acoustic tracks with strikingly present vocals.
Beyond that, though, it’s much more versatile. While it’s smart enough to know if you’re playing vinyl, streaming music or watching video, it can also connect to up to 16 external speakers, to create an impressive home theater effect.
It knows the character of external B&O speakers and adjusts them all according to what they do best, and depending on where they’re placed will adjust the output accordingly.
Bang & Olufsen says that it has worked on the audio to remove reflections from side walls. “Basically, to make the walls disappear. In Beosound Theatre, we are using the technology to direct sound away from the listener, which increases the perception of spaciousness and gives a much more immersive experience”, the company said.
This is a modular speaker so, as well as fitting on a TV happily, it will also fit if you upgrade your TV to a larger size, thanks to additional aluminum wings which can be attached, and form a great-looking extension of the TV itself. There are several sizes of wings so you can be sure of a great look. B&O says the design is inspired by the grace of sailboats, with what the company calls a “keel-like design”.
So, how much does all this glorious-looking and splendid-sounding kit cost? It’s not cheap. The company says prices start from $6,540 (£5,590 in the U.K.). It says prices start there because if you want to add a motorized stand, for instance, or those elegant aluminum wings, you’ll need to pay extra.
B&O products are known for being long-lasting and repairable, so although it’s a big price sticker, it could be something you’d own for a very long time.
