The five presentations will provide evidence-based information about mental illnesses and substance use disorders. One in every five people has a mental illness that impacts their lives, including in Pratt County. Often, substance use, including alcohol misuse, starts with a mental illness, so these are two topics that affect Pratt County’s families, friends, neighbors, and communities every day. The presentations will feature experts in their fields from across the country and Kansas and will be held at The Front Porch, 115 E. Fourth Street, Pratt. 11:30 doors open for brown bag lunch 11:50 brief intro about Compassion Kansas Noon presentation begins 1:15 presentation ends (including Q&A) 1:30/1:45 event ends The event provides time for community members to discuss and process the day’s presentation topic. The dates, speakers and topics are: Friday, June 10 Dr. Wanda Boone, North Carolina – How Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) impact people in childhood and throughout their lives Friday, June 17 Dr. Mark Green, Pratt What happens in the brain and body of a person with mental illness and best practices for treatment Friday, July 15 People with Lived Experience from Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Harper, Kiowa, and Pratt counties – Lessons from people in our region who know first-hand about mental illness and/or substance use disorder Friday, July 22 Dr. Alex Elswick, Kentucky – What happens in the brain and body of a person with substance use disorder and best practices for treatment Friday, August 5 Chad Childs, Wichita State University – Best practices for substance use disorder prevention, including how a community can protect its residents This series is made possible by a grant to Pratt Regional Medical Center and the Ninnescah Opioid Workforce (NOW) Coalition (now Compassion Kansas) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s Rural Communities Opioid Response Program. Compassion Kansas works in Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Harper, Kiowa, and Pratt counties to enhance substance use prevention, treatment and recovery, with an emphasis on mental health. The public is invited to a series of brown bag Lunch and Learn presentations this summer. The five presentations will provide evidence-based information about mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
One in every five people has a mental illness that impacts their lives, including in Pratt County. Often, substance use, including alcohol misuse, starts with a mental illness, so these are two topics that affect Pratt County’s families, friends, neighbors, and communities every day.
