It’s all change for a number of Volkswagen models, with the launch of updated ranges or variants for the Polo hatch and Tiguan Allspace SUV. The car maker has also added off-road packages for the Amarok, developed with Seikel.
In the case of the Polo, the 2022 model will be available in three forms, the Polo Life, Style and GTI. Among the new standard fixtures are a centre front airbag, front assist with cyclist monitoring, lane assist, and parking distance sensors front and rear.
LED headlights, two-part LED tail lights, a new front and rear bumper design, digital cockpit, digital radio, wireless charging and wireless App-Connect are all included.
These additions are further enhancements not only beyond what was standard in the previous Polo Trendline, but additional to the previous mid-specification Polo Comfortline.
The Polo Life also shares other upmarket items from the previous Comfortline including automatic headlight function, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, front centre armrest and illuminated vanity mirrors.
The practicality of the Polo GTI and Beats audio-equipped Polos has also been expanded, moving their boot volume from 305-litres to match all other Polo’s significant 351-litres.
The Volkswagen Polo Life is powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine, paired to a 5-speed manual (70kW/175Nm) or 7-speed DSG (85kW/200Nm), priced at $25,250 and $28,250 plus on-roads respectively.
A Vision & Tech package adds 8.0-inch navigation, digital cockpit pro, voice control, wireless app-connect, travel assist, and adaptive cruise control on the DSG. The Style is available with the DSG only, and is priced at $31,250 plus on-roads.
It’s powered by the same engine, but adds 10.25-inch digital cockpit pro, travel assist, park assist, IQ light matrix LED headlights with dynamic light assist, an illuminated grille strip, 16-inch alloys and front fog lights.
A Sound & Tech package adds similar goodies to the Life, plus keyless access and ignition, Beats 300w premium audio with six speakers, and a digital 8-channel amplifier. The 2022 Volkswagen Polo GTI hits the road with a 6-speed DSG transmission.
Powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine delivering 147kW of power and 320Nm of torque, it’s priced at $38,750 plus on-roads, and comes with 18-inch alloys, GTI body styling, a tartan interior, sport select suspension and sports seats.
A Sound & Tech package adds the Discover Pro 9.2-inch infotainment and navigation setup, and a Beats audio system.
Due to land at the same time, the revised seven seat capable Tiguan Allspace will be available in a six variant realigned range that that includes the 110TSI Life, 132TSI Life, 162TSI Elegance, 147TDI Elegance, 162TSI R-Line, and 147TDI R-Line.
With the exception of the front-wheel drive 110TSI Life, the Tiguan Allspace features 4MOTION all-wheel drive, driven via Volkswagen’s 7-speed wet DSG transmission. There are three tunes of four-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a turbo diesel.
As with last year’s revisions to the standard Tiguan, the R-Line package becomes a standalone model in the Tiguan Allspace range, reflecting the overwhelming preference of Elegance grade customers for the previously optional R-Line additions.
Further, the renewed Tiguan Allspace shares the design and infotainment upgrades that have elevated its more compact sibling, including digital cockpit pro, LED headlights, two-part LED tail lights, a new front and rear bumper design, and a digital radio.
Wireless phone charging and wireless App-Connect are also included, along with a torch in the boot. The Allspace Elegance and Allspace R-Line grades also grab ventilated front seats, and heated outboard seats in the second row.
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Life is priced at $44,590 (110TSI) and $48,590 (132TSI) – plus on-roads. The 110TSI is powered by a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW/250Nm, with a 6-speed DSG and front-wheel-drive.
The 132TSI is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine delivering 132kW/320Nm, with a 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
The range comes with Volkswagen’s IQ DRIVE technology that includes travel assist with adaptive lane guidance, front assist with pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, emergency assist, adaptive cruise control, side assist, rear cross traffic alert, and park assist.
There’s also front and rear parking sensors, driver fatigue detection and 360 degree occupant protection, as well as a rear view camera, LED headlights with high beam assist; LED taillights, and in the case of the Life models, 18-inch Kingston alloys.
A Luxury package adds Vienna Leather appointed upholstery, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic electric glass sunroof.
The Elegance variant is $56,990 (162TSI) and $58,490 (147TDI) plus on-roads, and is respectively powered by either a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine delivering 162kW/350Nm and a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine offering 147kW/400Nm.
Features in this spec including a 9.2-inch Discover Pro navigation infotainment system with voice and gesture control, tinted rear windows, 30 colour ambient interior lighting and additional chrome and silver styling elements.
A Sound & Vision package adds a head-up display, area view, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. The R-Line hits the road at $60,190 (162TSI) and $61,690 (147TDI), depending on whether you choose petrol or diesel.
It runs the same engines as the Elegance, but adds 20-inch Misano alloys, progressive steering, premium LED tail lights with dynamic indicators and R-Line specific Vienna leather appointed trim, steering wheel with touch haptic feedback buttons and bumpers.
There’s also R-Line front and rear bumpers, side sills, a rear spoiler, and badges on front grille and side spears. Stainless steel pedals and a black headliner also feature.
Volkswagen has also launched the Amarok V6 Alpine and Alpine Plus off-road packages, further lifting the rough terrain performance of the brand’s class-leading utes. Each package is limited to just 100 units.
Available on the Amarok V6 Core Auto, V6 Sportline, Highline and Aventura from Q2 2022, the upgrades add ground clearance, a snorkel and (for Alpine Plus) underbody protection, for as little as $6,090.
The Alpine off-road package features a Koni RAID Offroad kit with ground clearance lifted by about 25mm, front and rear twin-tube shock absorbers, with 70mm bore, front Eibach springs, and a special lower retainer for front shock absorbers.
Top and bottom front spring plates and a fully pre-assembled front suspension strut unit is joined by a rear 25mm spacer with special leaf spring brackets and additional supports and bump stops, and a snorkel made of polyethylene, along with protective cladding.
The Alpine Plus pack (at $12,090) includes all of the features of the Alpine kit, plus rock sliders, protective cladding for the doors and wheel arches, a breather kit for rear and front differential, transmission and transfer case, and engine, transmission and rear diff protection plates.
An off-road tyre package is also separately available for the Amarok V6 Sportline and Highline, consisting of five General Grabber AT3 255/60 R18 112 H XL tyres. The tyres include large sidewall lugs to help protect the tyre body from stones.
The rubber features stacked deflection ribs that protect the upper sidewall area by deflecting obstacles away from the tyre body, and protection ribs that shield the tyre and bead area from damage caused by curb stones and off-road obstacles.
